Come summer, shorts are most definitely not for everyone. Personally, I’ve never been a shorts person, and as I get older (and chicer I hope!), shorts are not at the top of my seasonal must-have list.
The same is true for a lot of my clients. No matter your age, size, or shape of your legs, shorts may not be what you want to wear. So where does that leave us when it’s sweltering and jeans aren’t an option?
Sure, dresses and skirts will do, but that can always facilitate the dreaded chub rub.
Instead, here are some shorts alternatives for keeping cool in hot weather.
A New Kind of Chino
Chinos are having a moment, with lots of fresh styles popping up that are a welcome departure from mom khakis. Doing a flared ankle pant provides a loose, easy feel with appropriate coverage. Theory’s cotton pants (top pic) are darling, and can be worn with half-tucked tees and sandals or sneaks. I’m also loving the slim cargo styles that offer a little personality to the historically bland chino pant.
This style, reminiscent of the gaucho, may not be for everyone, but it’s definitely a great option for summer days if you’re ok with the flowy factor. The silhouette is surprisingly flattering, as long as it’s in a soft, fluid fabric like silk or tencel.
The slouchy, harem shape has been going strong for a few seasons now, and it’s super appropriate for warmer weather. Generally speaking, this style offers more room in the crotch, top-leg area and then tapers down the leg. It’s relaxed, comfy, and on-trend.
